the great library

Our library has millions of great books, but before we check out a book we need to do a dla first. Some students get to check out books immediately, but don't let that stop you there a lot of books to read and enjoy. When you read a book completely you should take an AR test.when you take an AR test and get points and you get prizes. My favorite book is called Firestar's quest. And my favorite book is Series of unfortunate events. This is why our library is extraodinary!

Snowflake poetry

On Friday and today, the fifth-graders wrote different types of poems about snow and snowflakes and then created books with the poetry. They wrote an acrostic poem, a cinquain, a haiku and a free verse poem.
To practice our poetry writing skills, we wrote an acrostic poem and haiku together. Enjoy! (And see if you can write one! Remember a haiku has three lines with five syllables in the first and third line and seven syllables in the second line.)

Snowglobes are
Nice.
Opening windows in the
Winter lets in
Fluffy flakes.
Laying in the snow and making snow
Angels feels like fluffy
Kittens fur. I want snow on Christmas
Eve.

Today we had a two hour delay and did not come in til ten. First we did dla, and checked if we had our planners singhed. Then we did snack for a couple minutes, after that we took a CBM test. It was a reading test, it wasnt very hard. After wrighting we had tacos for lunch. And for social studies we made a time line. Then we wrote down homework in our planners. It was the best day we had in a while!

We're back

We let our blog get way out of date! Yikes!
Mrs. Griffin went to kindergarten for a month as part of her student teaching program and the fifth-graders got busy. We're not any less busy now, but we are determined to tell the world what fantastic stuff we are doing.
In science, we have studied variables with pendulums and paper cup lifeboats. We also taught our kindergarten buddies about pendulums and really enjoyed sharing science with our buddies.
In math, we've focused on measuring -- time, perimeter, circles, you name it! We taught our kindergarten buddies about diameter, radius and chords and made Christmas ornaments. We'll have to post a picture of it soon. It will be a quick review of fractions and decimals before we leave for Christmas break.
In reading we are going to read an abridged version of A Christmas Carol and compare and contrast the book with several movie versions.
Happy Holidays! We'll post again soon.
