the great library

Our library has millions of great books, but before we check out a book we need to do a dla first. Some students get to check out books immediately, but don't let that stop you there a lot of books to read and enjoy. When you read a book completely you should take an AR test.when you take an AR test and get points and you get prizes. My favorite book is called Firestar's quest. And my favorite book is Series of unfortunate events. This is why our library is extraodinary!

Snowflake poetry

On Friday and today, the fifth-graders wrote different types of poems about snow and snowflakes and then created books with the poetry. They wrote an acrostic poem, a cinquain, a haiku and a free verse poem.
To practice our poetry writing skills, we wrote an acrostic poem and haiku together. Enjoy! (And see if you can write one! Remember a haiku has three lines with five syllables in the first and third line and seven syllables in the second line.)

Snowglobes are
Nice.
Opening windows in the
Winter lets in
Fluffy flakes.
Laying in the snow and making snow
Angels feels like fluffy
Kittens fur. I want snow on Christmas
Eve.

Snow and PPE (a haiku)

We're back

We let our blog get way out of date! Yikes!
Mrs. Griffin went to kindergarten for a month as part of her student teaching program and the fifth-graders got busy. We're not any less busy now, but we are determined to tell the world what fantastic stuff we are doing.
In science, we have studied variables with pendulums and paper cup lifeboats. We also taught our kindergarten buddies about pendulums and really enjoyed sharing science with our buddies.
In math, we've focused on measuring -- time, perimeter, circles, you name it! We taught our kindergarten buddies about diameter, radius and chords and made Christmas ornaments. We'll have to post a picture of it soon. It will be a quick review of fractions and decimals before we leave for Christmas break.
In reading we are going to read an abridged version of A Christmas Carol and compare and contrast the book with several movie versions.
Happy Holidays! We'll post again soon.

From the blog box...

We've started something new in Mr. Fitch's class. Students have the option, when they are done with their work, to write something for Mrs. Griffin's blog box. She'll pick a few at the end of the week to post to the blog. This week the prompt asked students to describe an imaginary place using their senses. Here we go...

From W.W.
One day I woke up in candyland.
First of all I was swimming I chocolet.
Scondly I was jumpping on the marshmelose. Also, I was eating It.
Finilly I was walking and I got stuck in jello.

From L.P.
My imaginary place is full of money land. It smells like peoples pocket. I was so hungry I ate a dollar bill It was disgusting. Then I took ten dollars and went home. That was the best day ever. Then the next day I went back to money land. That was all about money land.

From J.M.
Today im going to tell you about money land. First of all, it smells like peoples pockets. You can hear change all over. The sound is loud. I would fly in a jet to money land. It is green all over. I will go to Mexico with the money and get a suvernear. That is how money land is.

A note from Mrs. Griffin --
We have been very busy in fifth-grade...so busy we almost forgot to blog. But not quite!

We finished reading Stuart Little, turned in a collection of several assignments from the book and presented oral book reports to the class. After all was said and done, students wrote some quick responses about whether they liked the book, whether they thought the assignments were hard or easy and whether they thought we should do oral book reports again.

I worship them because of the gooey cheesy stringy cheese. Last, I am fond of the taco salad. I love them because of the doritos in it instead of the crunchy, regular chips, but do you enjoy taco salad? Those are my favorite foods and posibly yours.

We will visit our kindergarten buddies again today. We are practicing a math rap that we will perform for the school at the first assembly!

First of all, we're going to read some fabulous books. We've read a good fiction book called Davy Crockett Saves the World. We read a true story about George Washington's teeth.
What's your favorite sport? One of our favorite sports is handball. Another is soccer. We enjoy football at recess.
(paragraph written by Mr. Fitch and Mrs. Griffin's class)

We are also studying weather and water this week. One of our activities is to keep track of how much it rains. Has it rained where you live?

Our favorite things

One of our assignments this week was to write an 8-sentence paragraph about our favorite things to do. Everyone worked hard and went through the entire writing process. After we finished our final drafts, we voted on which two paragraphs should be posted for the world to see.
Here they are.

From O. M. D.
What I like to do is many things and your going to here 3 of them! First I like watching WWE like Smack Down, Raw and ECW. I like watching WWE because I like Jeff Hardy, Under Taker, Thom Cena and Rey Mysterio. Next I like skateboarding with my skateboard at the Memorial Park. Skateboarding I like because I like doing ramps. Last I like biking and go for the can. I also like biking because I like going fast! Obviously you know what my three favorite things are.

From L.P.
There are several things I like to do. First I like to go to Mr. Biggs. Mr. Biggs is fun because they have bumper carts. Second I like to play football. I like to play football because it is fun and exercising. Third I like to play video games. I like to play video games because they have football games to play. In conclusion that is all of things I like to do.

Welcome

Welcome back to school!
The first day will be packed full of getting to know your teachers, each other and our classroom. We will also read a book by Chris Van Allsburg titled The Stranger. Van Allsburg also wrote Jumanji and The Polar Express.
Did you read any good books this summer? Do you have a favorite author?
Mr. Fitch and Mrs. Griffin are excited to get to know the answers to those questions and more this school year. We hope you are excited too.
