Red-footed tortoises

On Wednesday, Mr. Fitch's class had a great opportunity in science. Our fifth-grade neighbors (Mrs. Wulfkuhl's class -- visit their blog at http://wulfkuhle5.blogspot.com) had some four-footed guests and Mr. Fitch's class was invited to come see. We learned about red-footed tortoises. Here are some of the facts we learned:
  • The temperature of the eggs determine whether the tortoises are boys or girls when they hatch.
  • They live in South America, specifically in humid forests.
  • They are omnivores, but most of the time prefer plants.
  • Some people eat the tortoises.
We had a great time learning about the tortoises, feeding them and watching them move around the classroom.
